Concerns of Filling our Stomach!

I took this shot in Amritsar, a revered city in Punjab - 'the food granary of India'. There is a quote about Amritsar, "that no one stays hungry here, even if one has only '80 paise' in one's pocket".

This diversity of several coloured fruit has its own story, one may question that, yes! no one can go hungry after having a look at this bright, inexpensive, fruit laden cart in the well known market of this city, but how safe is the food that lies so openly displayed on carts there.

These fruits with the street vendors are coloured with various synthetic colours to add brightness to them. There are absolutely no safe food standards that are followed for the food sold in open.

An informed consumer may wonder 'Why do these vendors apply colours to the fruits?' The possible answer to this is, that, adding these flourescent colours probably attracts more consumers? One may also wonder 'what is important in life - eating brightly coloured and polished food or safe food or eating any quality food depending on the need of the stomach and the taste buds.

Another question may be, why are not the food safety inspectors being functional?

Then, there is also a question of the livelihood of these street vendors? It may not be a surprise that these vendors may quite qualify for the Poverty line.

These and many more paradoxical questions arise in one's mind.

Issue is not these questions, but what are the alternatives?
